Bienvenidos

Holaaaa- Well we decided that we were going to make a blog to keep our beloved family and friends updated on our Mexico adventures (and to keep a journal of what we do here). It has been a great couple of days. We flew all night long and got here at 5:15 in the morning Wednesday. We got the BEST seats in the airplane...but not really at all. We were in the very last row so we couldn't lay our seats back. And we both had aisle seats which was bad for 2 reasons. #1) We couldn't sit by eachother #2) The only bathroom was right behind us. Everyone heading back to the bathroom either stepped on us or hit us with their large bodies. Needless to say when we got here we were both pretty exhausted. So we are living with this couple named Jeremi and Rebecca Brewer. They are the directors here at the academy. Jeremi and a kid named Adrian were there waiting for us at the airport. Jeremi said he was glad that we flew in so early because it meant that traffic wasn't as bad. We live 11 miles away from the airport and Jeremi said that it can take anywhere from 25 minutes to 3 hours to get home depending on traffic! The Mexico City temple is about 8 miles away from us so it takes about 40 minutes to get there (way more if it is in the middle of the day). The taxi driver on the way home was pretty good. It was the other cars that I was nervous about. They are ALL over the place.
We got back here to the campus and we were able to sleep for a while. Then Jeremi gave us a tour of the campus (I'll be taking pictures later today of the campus). Then we hung out and talked for a while. Jeremi and Rebecca are awesome. They have a little 5 month old baby named Caitlyn. And a very large horse I mean dog named Gus. Last night they had to take Caitlyn to go get some shots. They had me come with them so that I could get my first "public health" experience in Mexico City. Again-the driving was insane. Cars are coming at your from all different directions. It was amazing to just look around and see a completely different way of life. I guess we are technically living in the "slums". Its a very very poor area with alot of poverty. We drove to one of the best hospitals in the Mexico City and it was actually pretty clean. The doctor was really sweet. They were telling me that in the morning she works at a hospital in the south but she doesn't get paid enough there to get by so she travels up north (where we are) and works a second job. Which is crazy considering she is a doctor.
The Academy campus is beautiful and very safe. It's on 4 acres and has high walls around the whole thing and a security guard that is there 24/7. It is very hot here. I need to get going but in my next post (probably later tonight) I will tell you all what we are actually going to be doing here. BUT we are SAFE. So dont worry!!!
